We were honoured to host the 7th European coinciding with the 1st World Meeting in Visual and Physiological Optics in the beautiful city of Wroclaw and celebrate the 175 anniversary of creation of the world’s first Department of Physiology at the University of Breslau (now Wroclaw) by Jan Evangelista Purkyné.
We were proud to have a truly world representation including delegates from Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Colombia, Germany, Greece, France, India, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Latvia, Mexico, New Zealand, Poland, Romania, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine, United Kingdom, and the USA.
VPOptics 2014 have brought new standards to Visual and Physiological Optics Meetings. It was important to involve in the meeting world-class keynote speakers and outstanding researchers to form a truly international Scientific Committee Board where every continent was represented. Every submitted paper (up to 4 pages long) has undergone a rigorous peer review. The review process was tedious and our gratitude goes to the Scientific Committee Board who performed excellent work in a timely fashion. The rejection rate was below 1% but the review process had mainly an educational purpose to further improve the authors’ submissions. VPOptics meetings are set to be also an educational platform where graduate students could rub shoulders with the world leaders in the field. All papers, irrespectively whether they were presented in the form of a talk, a poster, or the newly introduced form of Show & Tell, have been included in the Proceedings that have been published with an ISBN number.
VPOptics 2014 was not just about science but also a good networking atmosphere. Delegates had a chance to see a magic show by Jędrzej Bukowski, an acclaimed illusionist and guest of many television programs and the only magician in Poland with a PhD degree, who until recently was a lecturer at the Wroclaw University of Technology. A pleasant surprise for the delegates was the talk by Ivan Fiser, an ophthalmologist from Prague, which turned out to be … a great-great-grandson of Jan Purkyné. His lecture about life and works of Jan Purkyné produced great excitement among the delegates, which is still felt in post-conference discussions on forums and e-mails.
On behalf of the members of the Scientific Committee that were present during the Meeting in Wroclaw, we are proud to announce another important change in the Visual and Physiological Optics Meetings. From 2014, VPOptics meetings will be organised annually, alternating between Europe and other parts of the World. The 2nd World Meeting in Visual and Physiological Optics is set to be organised in Puebla, Mexico, in August 2015. The 8th European coinciding with the 3rd World Meeting in Visual and Physiological Optics will be held in Antwerp, Belgium in 2016 while the 4th World Meeting in Visual and Physiological Optics is set to be in Auckland, New Zealand in 2017.
